白鰭豚喜歡生活在江河的深水區，很少靠近岸邊和船隻，但它時常遊弋至淺水區，追逐魚蝦充飢。它的吻寬細長，上下頜長有130多枚圓錐形的同型齒，可它卻懶得咀嚼，只管張口吞下魚食，消化能力很強。白暨豚往往成對或三五成群一起活動，但人們很少有機會看到它，只有在它露出水面呼吸時才能瞥見一眼。

白鰭豚兩年繁殖一次，每胎1仔，出生時體長80釐米左右。新生幼體體色略深.成年白暨豚一般背面呈淺青灰色，腹面呈潔白色，在陽光的照耀下尤其光亮。水平伸展的鰭肢和尾鰭上下兩面分別與背面和腹面同色，這樣的顏色分佈恰好與環境顏色相符。當由水面向下看時，背部的青灰色和江水混為一體很難分辨；當由水底向上看時，白色的腹部和水面反射的強光顏色相近也很難被發現。這使得白鰭豚在逃避敵害、接近獵物時，有了天然的隱蔽屏障。白暨豚壽命可達30多年，雌獸一般在6歲達到性成熟，雄獸為4歲。成年白暨豚每年發情兩次，分別在3月至5月，8月至10月。孕期為10至11個月，一胎一仔，偶有兩仔。野生狀態下，成年白鰭豚雌雄比例為1：1，但雌獸懷孕率一般僅為30％，自然繁殖率很低。

每年的冬末春初是白鰭豚的交配期，母豚妊娠期長達1年左右，因此產仔大多在來年的春季。出生後的小白鰭豚靠母親的乳汁餵養，直到五六歲才算成熟；一般壽命30年。
