高速公路屬於高等級公路，簡稱高速路，據中國交通部《公路工程技術標準》規定，高速公路指“能適應年平均晝夜小客車交通量為25000輛以上、專供汽車分道高速行駛、並全部控制出入的公路”。各國儘管對高速公路的命名不同，但都是專指有4車道以上、兩向分隔行駛、完全控制出入口、全部採用立體交叉的公路。此外，有不少國家對部分控制出入口、非全部採用立體交叉的直達幹線也稱為高速公路。 2020年4月28日，中華人民共和國交通運輸部發布關於恢復收費公路收費的公告，自5月6日零時起，經依法批准的收費公路恢復收費（含收費橋樑和隧道）。 截至2020年年底，中國公路總里程519.81萬公里，其中高速公路里程16.1萬公里。
