陶藝，廣泛講是中國傳統古老文化與現代藝術結合的藝術形式。從歷史的發展可知，“陶瓷藝術”是一門綜合藝術，經歷了一個複雜而漫長的文化積澱歷程。它與繪畫、雕塑、設計、以及其他工藝美術等有著無法割捨的傳承與比照關係。 二十世紀八十年代中後期，隨著西方現代藝術的介入，西方的“當代陶藝”觀念對中國陶瓷藝術產生了廣泛而深刻的影響，“陶藝”的概念也一度成為了陶瓷藝術界的新時尚。它所體現的仍然是一種東、西方文化的矛盾與碰撞。諸如“何謂陶藝”，“陶藝與陶瓷藝術的關係如何”等一系列看似不是問題的基本的問題，直到如今未能取得統一認識和標準。
